Cheap Travel Insurance -
The first step for any UK resident travelling in Europe is to get the free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This entitles the holder to local medical treatment in state run hospitals in any EU country plus Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland at the same price as a local resident.
You should keep it on you at all times to provide you and your family primary emergency health cover, but NOT as a replacement for travel insurance.
